Total Wine enters Illinois market with Fairview Heights store

Total Wine & More is opening its first Illinois store on Thursday, Oct. 10, at 5905 N. Illinois St. in Fairview Heights.

The store offers a selection of more than 8,000 wines, 3,000 spirits, and 2,500 beers. It will feature what it says will be the area’s most comprehensive and unique shopping experience for consumers looking for the highest quality and best value in wines, spirits and beers.

The site is the former Here Today business location, which closed last year.

“We are excited to become part of the community in Fairview Heights,” said Edward Cooper, Total Wine & More’s vice president of Public Affairs & Community Relations. “As a company, we pride ourselves on serving our communities and providing consumers with what they deserve: outstanding service, phenomenal selection, best prices and unique customer experience. We know the importance of investing in the communities around us, which is why we are proud to partner with The BackStoppers to support their good works.”

The BackStoppers will receive 10 percent of all wine sales from the store’s grand opening weekend.

“Supporting the local communities that we serve is an essential part of who we are as a local business,” says Cooper. “Last year alone, Total Wine & More worked with over 13,000 local charitable, non-profits nationwide with in-kind and cash donations in excess of $9.5 million and helped those organizations raise more than $65 million for their outstanding efforts. We are proud to partner with The BackStoppers in Fairview Heights on their mission to provide ongoing, needed support to spouses and dependent children of local police officers, firefighters, paramedics and EMTs who have lost their lives in the line of duty.”

The new, 20,000-plus square-foot store supports more than 50 new jobs, 75 percent of which will be full time with full benefits – health care, dental, retirement, GED and college tuition assistance, partner benefits and others. Store team members take 100-plus hours of classroom and practical training prior to  working in the store and ongoing training.

Total Wine & More selects team members from its stores around the country – approximately 50 to 70 team members at a time – on annual and biannual educational trips to the vineyards of Napa and Sonoma, California and renowned winegrowing regions of Spain, France and Italy where those team members can meet with winemakers and develop a knowledge and understanding of the products carried at the store.

“Total Wine & More’s team members are the best educated and helpful in the business and this allows our teams to assist consumers find the perfect wine, spirit or beer to go along with a great, special occasion,” said Cooper.

In-store appearances by “rock star” wine, spirits and beer producers will be featured at the store’s dedicated tasting stations where customers learn about new products from the winemakers, distillers and brewers themselves. Total Wine & More says it is the largest retailer of first growth Bordeaux and the store features a climate-controlled wine cellar for high-end wines and rare selections plus a walk-in humidor for fine cigars.

Additionally, the Fairview Heights store has a high tech “wine education center” or classroom that is equipped with A/V capabilities, Wi-Fi and advanced technologies that allows the store team to offer in-store wine, spirits and beer classes as well as community meetings and special events. Total Wine & More uses the classroom to host “virtual tastings” that, through the use of technology, allows the world’s finest winemakers, distillers and brewers to interactively educate and conduct a tasting of their products – live from their wineries, distilleries and breweries – with customers in Total Wine’s classroom(s) in Fairview Heights and around the country. Over the years, Total Wine & More has hosted some of the world’s most outstanding winemakers, distillers and brewers including Chuck Wagner of Caymus and France’s Michel Chapoutier live from their cellars as well as Crystal Head Vodka’s Dan Aykroyd and the chief brewmasters from Stone Brewing.
