Originally erected in 1929, the Six Mile Regional Library in Granite City is a local landmark. To continue its longevity in the community, Korte & Luitjohan Contractors is in the midst of a $2.6 million extensive renovation of the interior and exterior of the building.
“The 17,000-square-foot library building will maintain its core structure, marble details, and two original fireplaces,” said Bruce Capelle, AIA, registered architect and project manager for Korte & Luitjohan. “The original plaster ceiling will be restored and will replace an acoustic tile ceiling that was installed during a former renovation. The remainder of the interior will be completely rebuilt according to current building code.”
The library consists of a lower level, a main floor where the stacks are located, and the mezzanine. Trivers Associates of St. Louis designed a new infrastructure for the three-story building to increase functionality.
The lower level will consist of several new spaces including a new youth section for age groups ranging from Pre-K to young adult, a 60-person capacity conference room that will be available for community use, and a local history room that will double as a quiet study area. The circulation desk will be relocated on the main floor to allow for additional stacks. The administrative offices will be stationed on the mezzanine level.
The library’s technology area will be expanded and more electrical outlets will be installed throughout the building to accommodate the use of electronic devices by patrons.
All mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems will be replaced, as well as the windows. New elevators will be installed at the front and rear of the building.
On the outside of the library, Korte & Luitjohan will clean and restore the brick and stone and put in handicap-accessible ramps at the front and back of the building. The exterior work includes bracing the high parapet to be sure it complies with building code. The parking lot will also be reorganized.
The Six Mile Regional Library’s staff and materials are temporarily housed at the former Niedringhaus School until construction is complete in August.
