Korte & Luitjohan renovating Illinois Supreme Court building

The renovation of the 1906 Illinois Supreme Court building in Springfield, Ill., by Korte & Luitjohan Contractors, Inc. began in June 2013, and is expected to be complete in one year.
The scope of work includes the renovation of office, storage and work areas, as well as the historic preservation of public spaces, courtrooms, library and support spaces for the court. Additional restrooms are being added in the basement and second floor, and existing restrooms are being updated to meet the current accessibility codes and laws. Updates to the HVAC systems include the removal of the original brick chute system and the installation of new ductwork, thus allowing for a cleaner air flow. Asbestos will be removed from the flooring, pipes and window caulk.
The historic preservation aspect of the project includes the cleaning, repairing and repainting to restore stone, wood, marble, and painted finishes. For example, the 110-year-old original doors are being stripped, repaired and refinished. Restoration of the light fixtures, tapestries, murals, door hardware and art glass will also be undertaken.
A new climate-controlled room will house the historical library collection in the basement of the building. While working in the basement to prepare the area for the new mobile storage system, Korte & Luitjohan Contractors discovered a high water table.  To resolve the issue, a 5-foot deep sump pit and a sub-terrain drainage system was installed in two rooms.  The installation of this drainage system will also prevent future water leakage in the basement.
Security and surveillance systems are also being updated and expanded. The existing exterior windows will be replaced to include protective glazing. The parking lot shared with the Attorney General’s Office has been redesigned and resurfaced to improve security and circulation. Additionally, any structural modifications to the roof will be made as necessary.
The job is being funded partly by the Illinois Jobs Now! project, which aims to create jobs and drive Illinois’ economy. During the renovations, the Illinois Supreme Court is holding session in Chicago, and the administrative staff is working at an interim location in Springfield. Once the building renovations are complete, the justices and administrative staff will return to their newly restored building on Capitol Avenue in Springfield.
