Scale AI to open new, state-of-the-art artificial intelligence, geo-tech center
Scale AI, a national leader in artificial intelligence and geospatial technology, recently announced that it will locate its state-of-the-art AI center in St. Louis’s historic Post Building, a major center for the city’s geospatial ecosystem.
Scale AI’s St. Louis AI Center was founded to support the critical geospatial data needs of the U.S. Government. The company’s presence in St. Louis is part of the city’s emergence as a center of gravity for national security, one forged from human capital and high-fidelity data.
Its impact will continue to resonate throughout the Greater St. Louis metro region as well.
“The Post Building provides the ideal environment for the next chapter of our growth in St. Louis,” said AJ Segal, head of the St. Louis AI Center at Scale AI. “We came to St. Louis four years ago to be close to our government partners and build the nation’s premier team for geospatial AI. This new space will allow us to continue investing in our 250-person team and the entire local ecosystem. We are proud to be a catalyst for innovation in Downtown North and are committed to making St. Louis the undisputed best place in the world to cultivate the talent that is so critical to our national security.”
The move represents a significant step forward for the StarWood Group’s Post Building and the Downtown North district, a multi-phase development project aimed at creating a dynamic, mixed-use community and innovation hub.
It also showcases the growth of St. Louis as a national hub for not only geospatial intelligence, but also defense technology.
Greater St. Louis Inc., which leads the GeoFutures Initiative to promote the region’s geospatial ecosystem, said Scale’s new center is an important developmental step. “This is not just about jobs, but also about strengthening our geospatial, AI, and defense tech sectors. This new center and the continued development of Downtown North position St. Louis for growth on all fronts,” said Dustin Allison, interim CEO of Greater St. Louis Inc.
“This agreement underscores St. Louis’ role as a defense tech hub and a national leader in geospatial artificial intelligence. Moving Scale AI into The Post Building will also help revitalize downtown St. Louis and open meaningful career opportunities in a cutting-edge industry. I was proud to support previous initiatives by Scale AI and appreciate their continued commitment to making St. Louis a cornerstone of their defense and geospatial innovation ecosystem,” said Senator Schmitt.
The StarWood Group owns the Post Building, which, along with The Globe Building, serve as key hubs for the growth of St. Louis’ geospatial sector in Downtown North. Scale AI will occupy approximately 8% of The Post Building, utilizing its state-of-the-art facility with advanced connectivity and collaborative workspaces. The company plans to open the doors to its new lab and welcome its workforce in October.
“St. Louis is cementing its role as a national leader in geospatial intelligence, and Scale AI is at the forefront of that movement,” said U.S. Representative Wesley Bell (MO-01). “This expansion into the Post Building is more than just a new office—it’s a major investment in our local workforce. I commend Scale for its deep commitment to our community and for proving that the technology of the future can and should be built right here in the heartland.”
The Center has become a significant local employer, creating accessible career pathways for a diverse workforce, with many employees joining without prior experience in AI or geospatial science.
“Scale AI has continued to grow its presence in St. Louis and it’s a powerful example of the inclusive growth we are building in our city,” said St. Louis Mayor Cara Spencer. “By planting its flag in the historic Post Building, Scale is not only helping to revitalize our downtown core but is also creating the accessible technology careers that will power our economy for years to come. We are proud to have them as a partner in building a more vibrant and prosperous future for all St. Louisans.”
