Macoupin County law enforcement personnel charged after weekend incident

On Aug. 20, 2025, the Staunton, Illinois Police Department released an official statement regarding an incident that had occurred over the past weekend involving three Macoupin County law enforcement personnel.

The official statement said that the Staunton Police Department had been contacted by the victim’s sister on Aug. 18 regarding an incident of battery that had occurred at Skeeters Bar (1216 S. Hackman St., Staunton, IL 62088) around 1 a.m. on Aug. 16, 2025.

The Staunton Police Department proceeded to launch an investigation, reaching out to the victim. After speaking with the victim directly, it was discovered that three suspects had battered him.

The suspects were identified as Logan Hemp, 35; Joshua Revisky, 35; and Jeffery Schoen, 36.

Hemp and Revisky are employees of the Macoupin County Sheriff’s Department; therefore, Macoupin County Sheriff Shawn Kahl was contacted and made aware of the incident. Bunker Hill Police Chief Zach Girth was also made aware of the incident, as Schoen is a Bunker Hill police officer.

After taking statements and gathering evidence, Hemp, Revisky and Schoen were arrested and booked into the Montgomery County Jail by the Staunton Police Department and Macoupin County Sheriff’s Department for Mob Action and Aggravated Battery in a Public Place. They were booked into the Montgomery County Jail due to their employment conflict.

The defendants have been formally charged with Aggravated Battery in a Public Place. All three were transported to the Macoupin County Courthouse on Aug. 19, 2025, for first appearance and hearing on pretrial release. They were released from custody on pretrial conditions pursuant to the SAFE-T Act.

The Macoupin County State’s Attorney’s Office indicated on the record at the first appearance they were recusing from the case and seeking a special prosecutor.

All subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

As a part of its official statement, the Staunton Police Department further thanked the Macoupin County Sheriff’s Department, Macoupin County States Attorney and the Bunker Hill Police Department for their cooperation and assistance in this investigation.

In a separate official statement from Macoupin County Sheriff Shawn Kahl issued on Aug. 20, it was noted that Hemp and Revisky were employees of his department and had been placed on administrative leave pending “a complete internal investigation.”
