Leading mental health groups call on employers to prioritize employees’ mental health

Six national mental health organizations recently issued a joint statement urging U.S. employers to prioritize their workforce’s mental health and wellbeing during a period of significant uncertainty.

Recent surveys of employees show increased need for mental health education, training, and stigma-reduction.

The statement was signed by Mind Share Partners, Mental Health America, APA Foundation’s Center for Workplace Mental Health, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), One Mind at Work, and Mental Health Coalition. It reads:
U.S. workplaces are facing significant disruption and uncertainty. Employers in the business, nonprofit, university, and government sectors are navigating changes that impact their operations.

At all levels, employees are feeling an increased level of stress. Uncertainty—especially financially—can take a mental toll. This is on top of a decline in workplace well-being over the past few years.

We urge employers to prioritize and invest in their employees’ mental health. Regardless of politics, we can all agree that employee well-being is a priority. Research has continually shown that investing in mental health and well-being has significant returns. This is not the time to dial-back those investments, but to redouble them.
