Local aesthetic physician encourages men to prioritize their skin during Men’s Health Month

Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging & Wellness Patient Tony meets with Dr. Kristen Jacobs.

The skincare industry has continued to evolve, as do its customers and according to recent data, more consumers in the cosmetic and aesthetic industry are men. June is Men’s Health Month and local aesthetic physician, Dr. Kristen M. Jacobs is encouraging men to shift their perspective on self- care and prioritize their skin during Men’s Health Month.

“Long gone are the days where men feel as if having a skincare routine isn’t for them,” said Dr. Jacobs. “I have witnessed our male patients become more and more comfortable coming into Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging & Wellness and I think this is thanks to societal norms that have been gradually changing. The traditional stereotypes that limit men are going away and having grooming and self-care practices doesn’t mean you lack masculinity. It is so wonderful to have a variety of patients and to help men feel more confident by guiding them through treatments and skincare recommendations.”

Dr. Jacobs adds that men also shouldn’t consider ‘borrowing’ their significant other’s facial products rather than getting their own – as men’s and women’s skin are significantly different. Testosterone causes men’s skin to be 20 to 25% thicker than women’s. Sebum is the natural oil your skin produces to lubricate skin and men’s skin produces double the sebum compared to women’s. Dr. Jacobs said the products targeted to reduce oil and shine in women simply won’t be effective for men because they aren’t strong enough. She often sees men, like patient Tony, come in to find out what will work best for their skin, since everyone’s skin is unique.

“Ooh La La is very welcoming to everyone and as a man, it is extremely important that I feel comfortable where I’m receiving skincare treatments,” said Tony. “I’ve been using several SkinMedica products that Dr. Jacobs has recommended and I’ve seen great results. For men who don’t know where to start, I recommend focusing on a regimen by getting a good cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen. When I came in, I decided I wanted to do Botox, filler and focus on my jawline since I love preventative skincare and I am so happy with my results.”
