The law firm of Mathis, Marifian & Richter, Ltd. (MM&R) recently announced that the Honorable William D. Stiehl, Jr., joined the firm as of counsel, effective June 21, 2023.

William D. Stiehl, Jr., (Bill) has served the legal community for over 40 years and has stepped up to serve the people of the Twentieth Judicial Circuit more than once. In 2018, following the death of Judge Robert LeChien and a recommendation by Illinois Supreme Court Chief Justice Lloyd A. Karmeier, Stiehl was temporarily appointed to fill a Resident Circuit Judge seat in the Twentieth Judicial Circuit.

In 2020, following another Circuit Judge vacancy, Judge Stiehl returned to the bench. He was appointed as an at-large Circuit Judge in the Twentieth Judicial Circuit. Stiehl’s appointment took effect on July 15, 2020, and concluded on Dec. 5, 2022.

Stiehl began his legal career in the St. Clair County Public Defender’s Office where he served as a St. Clair County assistant public defender. He would then go on to serve as partner at law firms in Belleville for the next 33 years. In 2011, Stiehl would open the doors to his own firm, the Law Offices of William Stiehl Jr., where he handled both civil and criminal cases in state and federal courts.

Stiehl is also dedicated to serving the community. He was instrumental in founding Family Hospice in Belleville and served on the organization’s original Board of Directors. Stiehl is also a member of the Illinois State Police Merit Board and the Board of Directors for the Greater East St. Louis Community Fund. Additionally, he has been a generous sponsor of Belleville’s Art on the Square for many years.

Judge Stiehl’s practice is principally focused in civil and criminal litigation in federal and state courts as well as education law. Stiehl will be in MM&R’s Belleville, Ill., office and clients may reach the office at (618) 234-9800.
