Retiring couple closing paint and craft business in Troy

After 40 and a half years in business, Ron and Carol Klaustermeier have made the decision to retire and are closing A&R Paints and Crafts, located in the Odd Fellows Building at 201 S. Main St. in Troy.

The Klaustermeiers said they made the decision back in November that they would start their closing sale at this time. According to Carol, the only role the COVID-19 closure had on their decision was that “staying at home isn’t so bad. We can do this.”

The sale started on July 13 with 30 percent off of everything in stock, including Boy Scout merchandise. The Radio control cars sold out the first day and customers from as far away as Springfield were lined up from the counter to the front door throughout the day.

As one of the only hobby shops in the area, the Klaustermeiers did not feel selling the business was a viable option. Ron said “We have met a lot of wonderful people over the years that have become friends, and the closeout sale is a way to thank customers for their business. We are comfortable with the choice we made.”

The Klaustermeiers hope to be able to clear out their inventory in a timely way and will continue to live in Troy, spending time with their five grandchildren that live in the area and traveling once it is safe to do so again.

A&R Paints and Crafts will be open during regular hours for the retirement sale, 10 a.m. to  5 p.m. Monday, Thursday and Friday and 9 a.m. to  3 p.m. on Saturdays until everything is gone.
