Allsup sponsoring sixth annual Get Up & Go Biathlon
BELLEVILLE — Allsup, a nationwide Social Security Disability Insurance representation company, is sponsoring the sixth annual Get Up & Go! Biathlon in Belleville on Sunday, Aug. 7.
The event features wheelchair divisions for the biathlon, biathlon teams and 5-milerun.
“Our community has numerous different races, but not all are accessible for athletes who have disabilities,” said Meghan Morgan, program director of the Disabled Athlete Sports Association. “The Belleville Get Up & Go! Biathlon team has made a concerted effort to show the importance of including athletes of all abilities in community race events.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for your health by reducing the risk and impact of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and some cancers.
“Everyone can benefit from being physically active,” said Get Up & Go! board member and biathlon race director Mark Peters. “We’ve added the wheelchair divisions to provide athletes of different abilities the opportunity to be active, compete, and help raise awareness of the benefits of physical activity.”
The Get Up & Go! Biathlon is a 5-mile run followed by a 20-mile bicycle race along relatively flat country roads. Athletes who don’t cycle can register for the 5-mile run only.
Registration fees support Get Up & Go! programs that include community garden grants, neighborhood, school, workplace and faith community health initiatives, and an annual health policy summit.
