The William L. Beatty Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse in Alton was recently marked for accelerated disposition by the U.S. General Services Administration.
Located at 501 Belle Street, the facility serves as a Social Security Administration office and also houses the Office of Surface Mining.
Constructed in 1972, the two-story Beatty Courthouse is made of dark brown brick, gray-vein limestone trim, and fascia stone. The property is bordered by a two-foot retaining wall made of stone from the GM&O Railroad. In October 2002, the building was named in honor of U.S. District Court Judge William Louis Beatty.
The GSA listed the Alton facility on their published list of assets marked for accelerated disposition on March 31, 2025.
Also on the GSA’s March 31 accelerated disposition list is the Federal Building in Mt. Vernon, Ill., located at 105 S. 6th Street. It too houses a Social Security Administration office.

“GSA is focused on rightsizing the federal real estate portfolio to reduce the burden on the American taxpayer while also delivering space that enables its agency customers to achieve their missions. This initiative aims to engage the market, attract interested parties, and inform strategies that will expedite the disposition of federal assets, consistent with all applicable laws,” the GSA noted in a published statement.
The GSA further said that the agency “works closely with tenants during any disposition in the event a relocation is required. However, a sale does not necessarily mean tenants will need to be relocated. GSA could dispose of an asset, thereby relieving the government of significant liabilities, and lease the space back from the buyer.” Other media reports have indicated that the SSA office in Alton will move to another location.

The official statement also indicated that additional assets would be added to the list regularly.
