ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (AP) _ With a decision just days away, supporters of a 123-year-old stone courthouse are urging an Illinois county to keep away the wrecking ball.

It could cost $20 million or more to renovate the Rock Island County courthouse for other uses. The county board will vote on July 17 whether to take key steps toward demolition.

The Dispatch-Rock Island Argus says a rally to save the courthouse drew more than 40 people Sunday. They held signs declaring, ``Save Our Court House.'' Local resident Vince Thomas says Rock Island ``will lose the character of the city'' if the old courthouse is knocked down.

Drew Starenko of Rock Island's Broadway Historic District says the courthouse could last another 100 years.
