CHICAGO (AP) _ Historian Graham A. Peck will discuss the progressive policies of Stephen A. Douglas in a free lecture June 3.

Douglas is remembered mostly as the victor over Abraham Lincoln in the pivotal 1858 U.S. Senate race in Illinois. He was vanquished by Lincoln for president in 1860.

But Peck will explain that the ``Little Giant'' advocated for expansion of the U.S. to the west and for the creation of a national railroad system.

The event at the Douglas Tomb State Historic Site will mark the 156th anniversary of his death. It will be from 11 a.m. to noon.

Peck is a history professor at Saint Xavier University in Chicago. He is the prize-winning writer, director and producer of the film ``Stephen A. Douglas and the Fate of American Democracy.''
