Belleville proposes property tax increase; public hearing set for Dec. 4

A public notice was recently posted by City of Belleville Finance Director Jamie Maitret announcing the proposed property tax levy increase for the City of Belleville and a public hearing to approved the proposal that is set for Dec. 4.

 A public hearing to approve a proposed property tax levy increase for the City of Belleville for 2023 will be held at 7 p.m. on Dec. 4, 2023 at 7:00 P.M. in the City Council Chambers at Belleville City Hall.

Any person desiring to appear at the public hearing and present testimony to the taxing district may contact Jamie Maitret, Finance Director, 101 S. Illinois St., Belleville, IL 62220, (618) 233-6810.

The corporate and special purpose property taxes extended or abated for 2022 were $11,437,845.

The proposed corporate and special purpose property taxes to be levied for 2023 are $12,335,000. This represents a 7.8437% increase over the previous year.

The property taxes extended for debt service and public building commission leases for 2022 were $0.

The estimated property taxes to be levied for debt service and public building commission leases for 2023 are $0. This represents a 0.00% increase over the previous year.

The total property taxes extended or abated for 2022 were $11,437,845.

The estimated total property taxes to be levied for 2023 are $12,335,000. This represents a 7.8437% increase over the previous year.

    This is getting crazy. I don’t see any benefits from these tax increases. My road is in terrible condition we have no curbs, no one flushes the culverts, there hasn’t been any chip and oil done in years. An actual asphalt road would be nice. I’m glad the police and firemen will have pensions but taxing us out of our homes won’t help in the long run.
