Local aesthetic physician educates women during National Menopause Awareness Month

Dr. Kristen M. Jacobs

For some, transitioning into menopause is not always easy. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, studies show that during the first five years of menopause, a woman’s skin loses about 30% of its collagen. September is National Menopause Awareness Month and Kristen M. Jacobs, MD, local aesthetic physician and owner of Ooh La La Spa Anti-Aging & Wellness, is educating women on the impacts of menopause on the skin.

Menopause can start for women as early as their late thirties and can often come with a variety of symptoms including hot flashes, fainting, sleep disturbances, changes in their menstrual cycle, weight gain, irritability, or mood swings. Dr. Jacobs has more than 15 years of experience in aesthetic medicine and said throughout the years she can see how menopause often impacts overall health and appearance of the skin.

“Menopause is about understanding the natural changes that happen to your body and choosing how to take care of and support your body and skin throughout the process,” said Dr. Jacobs. “This time can be really tough for a lot of my patients, and I want them to know we are here to support and educate them. We know that our skin loses the ability to retain water and produce collagen as we age, causing dryness and loss of volume and elasticity.”

Dr. Jacobs recommends finding the right products and treatments that can help combat sagging skin, dryness, brown spots, loss of volume in your face and loss of collagen. Hormones play an important role in healing the skin and when hormone levels fall, the skin might need an extra boost. She recommends treatments like Ultherapy and Secret RF that target the skin’s support system to stimulate and remodel collagen. These treatments also lift the skin, creating a more youthful appearance.
