OSF HealthCare Saint Anthony’s Health Center observes Great American Smokeout

Karen Boyd, nurse navigator at OSF HealthCare Moeller Cancer Center in Alton, presents the ‘Courage to Quit,’ a new smoking cessation program, to employees to mark the Great American Smokeout on Nov. 17, 2022.

Mission Partners (employees) at OSF HealthCare Saint Anthony’s Health Center in Alton marked the Great American Smokeout on Nov. 17, 2022 by learning about a new way to quit.

The Courage to Quit program from the Respiratory Health Association is a free, evidence-based three-session program where participants will understand why they smoke, smoking cessation methods, smoking triggers, relapse prevention, social support and more.

Mission Partners on Thursday also reviewed myths about smoking cessation, such as the use of laser therapy, acupuncture and hypnosis.

“There’s no evidence these treatments are effective,” said LeeAnn Underwood, hospice coordinator at OSF Saint Anthony’s.

The Courage to Quit program at OSF Saint Anthony’s is, for now, being offered to OSF Mission Partners and patients. But organizers hope to expand to the public.

“It’s not easy to quit smoking. Most people take two or three attempts,” said Karen Boyd, nurse navigator at OSF HealthCare Moeller Cancer Center in Alton. “But you can start the journey to better health today.”

This poster outlines important details behind the Courage to Quit program.
