COABE applauds 2022 Legislative Champion Representative Amy Elik

Illinois 111th district Representative Amy Elik was recognized on Oct. 7 by the Coalition on Adult Basic Education (COABE) at Lewis and Clark Community College’s Scott Bibb Center for her sponsorship of a bill that will help erase the stigma of a high school equivalency diploma versus a high school diploma. The bill also will reduce the cost of GED exams for adult education students.

The Coalition on Adult Basic Education (COABE) leads efforts to raise awareness and recognize excellence in the field of adult education. From Sept. 19 to 23 COABE, along with more than 100 national, state, and local partners celebrated National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week.

“I applaud Representative Amy Elik, recipient of the Legislative Champion Award, for her outstanding contributions and support of adult education! The prestigious “Legislative Champion Award” is granted for distinguished leadership and support for adult education,” said Sharon Bonney, CEO of COABE.

State Representative Amy Elik’s sponsorship of a bill in the Illinois State Senate helped to erase the stigma of a high school equivalency diploma versus a high school diploma, and also reduced the cost of GED®  exams for adult education students. These changes in legislation have been essential to the adult education programs in Illinois state-wide.

“State Representative Amy Elik was the Illinois House sponsor for a bill that erases the distinction between a high school diploma and a GED®  certificate not only in-state but also for those who move to Illinois with a GED® from other states,” said 2021 State Advocate for Adult Education Erin Vobornik.
