AltonWorks plans update on historic district efforts

AltonWorks, the organization formed more than two years ago with the idea of transforming Downtown Alton, plans an update on its efforts.

The public is invited to a session at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 8. Specific to the discussion will be the efforts to create a historic district, which have involved research, writing, and collaboration by community volunteers, local historic preservation organizations, and consult-

The update is planned at The Old Bakery Beer Company on Landmarks Boulevard.

The initial efforts were inspired by lawyer and philanthropist John Simmons and his wife Jayne, who have purchased a number of historic properties in the area and pledged major investments over a multiple-year period in an attempt to make Downtown a hub for living, working and establishing businesses.

The Simmons announced in April 2020 that they were pausing their efforts at AltonWorks in light of the economic uncertainties brought about by the pandemic.
