Edwardsville-based Prairie Farms has partnered on a major milk donation in honor of Dairy Month in June and in recognition of milk as an essential food in the diets of people, including those who are less fortunate.
Prairie Farms has partnered with Nathaniel Reid Bakery in Kirkwood, Mo., to donate 2,000 half pints of milk to Operation Food Search in St. Louis, which serves people in the bistate area.
Nathaniel Reid Bakery is a Prairie Farms customer that has used dozens of gallons of milk daily to make pastries and desserts since opening in 2016. During a recent conversation with Prairie Farms, Reid indicated his desire to partner with and donate some of the milk he receives to an area food pantry. Prairie Farms already maintains a milk donation program with Operation Food Search, the leading distributor of free food for the region.
With June Dairy Month being a logical time to bring milk to those in need a partnership was formed between the three entities to plan a donation and subsequent distribution.
“We’re delighted to receive this donation of milk for our community, said Jack Baran, food donations relationship manager with Operation Food Search. “Individual milk cartons are perfectly sized for distribution and provide important nutrition as we work toward our goal of ending hunger in the St. Louis region.”
Prairie Farms Dairy Inc. is one of the largest and most successful dairy cooperatives in the Midwest and parts of the South. Elements of the cooperative include more than 800 farm families, 8,100 employees, 51 manufacturing plants, over 100 distribution facilities, and annual sales of more than $3 billion.
