Schnuck Markets to permanently close store in Alton

After temporarily closing its Oakwood area store in Alton last month, Schnuck Markets Inc. today announced that it will not renew the store’s lease, and that the store at 1721 Homer Adams Parkway will remain closed permanently.

The lease for the 51,000-square-foot store expires in June. The store’s 45 teammates will continue to work at other area Schnucks stores where they will retain the same rate of pay.

The store had initially closed on March 16 so that its teammates could assist at other Schnucks stores that were seeing significant increases in customer traffic due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Oakwood store, a former Shop ‘n Save, has experienced poor sales since its October 2018 acquisition.

“Even prior to the pandemic, shoppers in the River Bend area had overwhelmingly chosen instead to visit our nearby Alton store, which is only a mile and a half away, and our Godfrey location which is less than two miles away,” said Schnucks Chairman & CEO Todd Schnuck. “With that data, and knowing that the lease expiration was approaching, we made the decision to close the store and focus on those Metro East stores that customers have shown us they prefer.”

Metro East Schnucks customers will continue to have 15 other Schnucks stores to choose from in the area. Those stores employ a combined total of approximately 1,600 employees.

IT WILL BE SAD TO SEE THAT PARTICULAR STORE BEING CLOSED, I WAS IN THAT NEIGHBORHOOD FOR YEARS LIVING IN THE OAKWOOD ESTATES APARTMENTS AND WALKING WAS FEASIBLE FOR SHOPPING AND EXERCISE FOR MANY MANY PEOPLE EVEN AN 80 YEAR OLD ELDERLY WOMAN THAT PUSHED HER CHAIR/SEAT TO GO TO THE STORE THERE, ALSO A GREAT AUNT THAT LIVED NEARBY WHO TURNED 100 LAST YEAR, WAS A FAVORITE THERE FOR MANY YEARS, SHE LIVED BEHIND THE MORTUARY ON OAKWOOD ROAD, SHE DIDN’T DRIVE BUT WALKED UNTIL HER MID 80’S UNTIL HER HEALTH WENT DOWN.. MANY PEOPLE WILL NOW BE WALKING FARTHER OR PAYING FOR LOCAL TRANSPORTATION, IN WHICH SOME MAY NOT HAVE THE FINANCES TO PAY FOR GAS BUT ONLY BUY SOMETHING TO EAT OR DRINK.. I LOVED THE WORKERS AND THE GUY NAME MARK, I’LL NEVER FORGET WHEN I WAS LOOKING FOR A DEEP FREEZER THAT WAS ADVERTISED AND THEY WERE UNLIMITED, BUT SINCE I WAS THEIR PRIOR TO THEM SELLING OUT, HE KINDLY LOCATED ONE FOR ME AND MY FAMILY IN JERSEYVILLE AND I STILL HAVE IT.. THANKS STAFF, YOU’RE LOVED.. I WILL SEE YOU WHEN SHOPPING 😍😍😍🙏
