Ameren Illinois upgrading natural gas pipeline in Madison County

Company has invested more than $90 million over the last three years in the county

Ameren Illinois says it will construct five miles of new natural gas transmission pipeline in Glen Carbon along Illinois State Routes 157 and 162 beginning in late February.

The project will replace vintage steel natural gas transmission pipeline from the 1960s with a combination of modern 16-inch, 12-inch and 10-inch steel pipeline.  Once the pipeline is completed and in-service by the beginning of fall, it will strengthen the integrity and reliability of the company’s natural gas system and support economic development for towns in Madison County. The total investment for this phase of the project is approximately $32 million.

·         Last year, crews replaced 15 miles of pipeline from Troy to Highland. Total investment was
$43 million.

·         In 2018, crews upgraded 6.4 miles of pipeline from Route 157 in Glen Carbon to Zenk Road.  Total investment was $18 million.

“We have been busy in Madison County strengthening the integrity and reliability of our natural gas infrastructure in Madison County,” said Richard J. Mark, chairman and president, Ameren Illinois. “With these enhancements, Ameren Illinois is taking proactive steps to prepare for the future needs of our natural gas customers. We’re excited to bring these enhancements to our customers in Madison County.”

As required by law, Ameren Illinois will call JULIE (8-1-1) prior to starting work so crews can dig safely. Customers will see paint marks and colored flags in the field and along the road to mark the location of underground utilities. Customers will also receive notifications by mail of the work being planned in the area.
