Public invited to Alton’s first workshop on Great Streets initiative

The city of Alton says plans are underway for the first in a series of community planning workshops for the Alton Great Streets project, a comprehensive planning initiative designed to assist the city in outlining a path toward a livable and vibrant downtown.

The goals of the project include: connecting the different segments of the district to one other and to the riverfront, re-thinking the composition of the Broadway corridor, strengthening downtown’s resiliency, and enhancing the Alton brand through promoting walkability, wayfinding, improved safety and connectivity.

The project is the first of its kind to take place in Illinois; thus serving as a precedent for the process and the outcomes that embody this initiative as advocated by East-West Gateway Council of Governments.

The first community planning workshop will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 20, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at a location to be determined.
