Mary Starmann-Harrison, president and CEO of Hospital Sisters Health System, Springfield, became the new chair of the Illinois Health and Hospital Association’s 2019 Board of Trustees as of Jan. 1.
The IHA Board of Trustees is the policymaking body for the association, representing more than
200 hospitals and nearly 50 health systems across Illinois.
“Mary is a bold thinker with a keen understanding of the hospital community and the work of the Association,” said IHA President and CEO A.J. Wilhelmi. “Having served on the board of the American Hospital Association and as chair of the Wisconsin Hospital Association, Mary is a highly regarded and well-respected leader in the hospital community locally and nationally. Her ability to build relationships and navigate the political environment will be instrumental in leading our work to ensure that all Illinoisans have access to high-quality healthcare in their communities.”
Appointed president and CEO of HSHS in 2011, Starmann-Harrison previously served as the regional president and CEO of SSM Health Care of Wisconsin. Since 1980, she has served in healthcare management for organizations, including Tenet Physician Services’ western region and St. Luke’s Medical Center in Phoenix. Starmann-Harrison began her career in 1979 as a registered nurse in the emergency department.
“I look forward to working with health care and legislative leaders across the state to improve the health and hospital environment across Illinois,” said Starmann-Harrison. “As hospitals and health care facilities, we help families and patients in their moments of greatest need, and we are also some of the biggest employers in the communities we serve. The challenges in health care are numerous, ever-changing. They evolve with each passing week. While we may have differences along the way, we should all ultimately be committed to delivering the best health care possible for patients and families in Illinois.”
Starmann-Harrison received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and her master’s degree in health service administration from Arizona State University. She is a fellow of the American College of Health Care Executives.
