From an early age, Nathan Klitzing knew what he wanted to do for a living. His father died when he was young, and watching what his mom went through afterwards, he saw first-hand the value of financial planning.
After graduating from Southern Illinois University Carbondale with a degree in finance, he became a Certified Financial Planner. He has worked in the financial services industry for 14 years, and joined Cambridge Capital Management, LLC in 2008 and became a partner in the firm in 2011.
He previously worked as a municipal bond specialist in Chicago and as a financial advisor in Clayton, Mo.
“I wanted to work for a fee-only fiduciary based firm,” he said, and enjoys working for a small Illinois-based firm that doesn’t have to report to Los Angeles, Chicago or New York. “I enjoy being back home in O’Fallon.”
Cambridge has offices in O’Fallon and St. Louis, and plans to open satellite offices in its market service area within the next three to five years. In Illinois, the firm’s clients predominantly come from the Madison, Monroe and St. Clair county areas. The firm also services clients throughout the United States, but most have a connection to the Greater St. Louis area.
Klitzing manages the day-to-day operations of the firm, which Ken Diel founded in 1999. For more than 18 years, Cambridge has been helping clients meet their long-term financial, investment and retirement goals.
As a registered investment adviser and one of the first fee-only firms in the area, Cambridge has a fiduciary obligation to put the needs of its clients above the needs of the firm, he said.
Cambridge focuses on wealth management and retirement planning, and works with the emerging affluent, those nearing retirement and current retirees.
“It’s important to know where you stand,” said Klitzing. “Nothing is more emotional than money.” He enjoys working with clients that are part of the community and developing long-term relationships with his clients.
Klitzing said he never has a boring day and loves seeing his clients’ plans come to fruition and watching them accomplish their goals. It’s rewarding to see one of his clients retire after 10 years of planning or to see one of his client’s kids go through college.
Outside the office, Klitzing enjoys being a dad. He plays golf and loves spending time with his family. He is a member of the O’Fallon-Shiloh Chamber of Commerce, SIUC Alumni Association and the Financial Planning Association of Greater St. Louis.
He and his wife, Annie, live in Shiloh with their three daughters.
