St. Louis-based firm earns international acclaim for medical device design
ST. LOUIS — Metaphase Design Group Inc., a researcher and designer of medical systems, devices and hand-intensive products and packaging, recently accepted an International Design Excellence Awards 2017 Bronze Award.
The honor was for the design of the Medtronic StraightShot M5 Microdebrider, a trademarked, handheld device used in rhinoplasty surgery. Such a procedure typically involves three instruments simultaneously inserted into a single nasal and sinus cavity that results in instrument and hand interferences throughout surgery. The M5 Microdebrider was designed to reduce the physical mass of the hand piece to a minimum.
“We hold the IDEAs in the highest regard and consider them to be one of the toughest yet most rewarding global awards programs,” said Dr. Bryce Rutter, founder and CEO of Metaphase Design Group. “As a real test of quality and innovation, this international recognition helps to reconfirm with our customers that good design does matter.”
The IDEA is an international design competition sponsored annually by the Industrial Designers Society of America and judged by design experts from around the world.
“My team and I are always pursuing excellence in our work, and when we challenge and build upon our designs, we become much more advanced and refined in our craft,” continues Rutter.
IDEA winners receive listing in IDSA’s annual Yearbook of Design Excellence and a showcase in an exhibit at The Henry Ford Museum to become part of the permanent collection. The Awards Ceremony will be held at IDSA’s International Design Conference in Atlanta, Georgia on Aug.16-19.
