HSHS St. Elizabeth’s honors Swansea nurse with national Daisy award
BELLEVILLE – HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital recently awarded Mary Maxim, an RN and Swansea resident, with the Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nurses.
Maxim has served as a registered nurse for St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for 39 years, with 26 years in the Cardiac Cath Lab. The award is part of the Daisy Foundation’s nationwide program to recognize the efforts nurses perform every day.
The nomination was submitted by a colleague. The nomination story noted the time, care, and compassion that Maxim showed a recent patient. “Mary went above and beyond to stay with a patient and calm him, which was instrumental in keeping the patient in the hospital to ensure he received the care he needed. When she visited the patient the following day, he positively commented on her ongoing support and presence. Mary treats all her patients this way every day. Her compassion and respect for patients and families is one that is never questioned and never falters.”
“I am honored to receive the national Daisy Award,” said Maxim. “Having patients return for a social visit from time to time after surgery gives me great pride in knowing that I have made a difference in their well-being with the genuine caring, compassion, and respect that I have shown each of them.
A total of 13 dedicated nurses were also recognized for receiving additional individual nominations for this quarter. These colleagues include:
Kallie Bishop, Victoria Reno, Rebecca Ross, Sara Weber and Joann Wittenauer (Critical Care Unit); Terry Elden (Rehab); Erin Eberhart and Christy Hunter (Medical/Surgical); Mary Wolfe (Progressive Care Unit); Kelly Brent (Quality Assurance); Cassandra Baker (Wound Care Center); Danielle Lugo (Emergency Department) and Thomas Beauman (Float Pool).
St. Elizabeth’s introduced participation in the nationally-recognized Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nursing in May 2015 which was made possible through funds provided by HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Foundation.
Nominations for future awards at St. Elizabeth’s continue to be accepted. Patients and visitors are encouraged to share and submit their story of witnessing excellent and compassionate care from the clinical staff.
