Belleville man charged with bank robbery in Collinsville

EAST ST, LOUIS — Michael S. Putman, 50, of Belleville, was charged on Saturday with a one-count criminal complaint of bank robbery for an incident that occurred one day before at the Regions Bank in Collinsville.

The court ordered that Putman be detained without bond pending indictment.

Officials said a masked man entered the bank around 11:25 a.m. Deputy U.S. marshals spotted the alleged getaway car in East St. Louis and arrested two men after the vehicle crashed near the Eads Bridge. No charges have been indicated against a second man.

If convicted, Putman faces a term in prison of up to 20 years, a fine up to $250,000 and a term of supervised release of up to five years.

The case was investigated by the Collinsville Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation with assistance from the Illinois State Police, East St. Louis Police Department and the United States Marshal Service. The case is assigned to Assistant United States Attorney Ali Summers.
