Holland Construction celebrates its 30th year

By RITA DUCKWORTH
p04 holland    The year 2016 was another successful one for Swansea-based Holland Construction Services, thanks to a rising economy and its steadfast commitment to client satisfaction.
Holland put into place more than $180 million worth of construction in 2016. Among the notable projects completed or in progress are the Bridgeton, Mo. Recreation Center, the St. Louis luxury apartment communities of Encore at Forest Park, Evo in Richmond Heights, and Alinea-Town & Country, Sycamore Senior Living in Pickerington, Ohio, and the new Wayne City, Ill., K-12 School. Their largest job in progress is the HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in O’Fallon, Ill. The year 2016 was also cause for celebration with clients, friends and subcontractors when Holland reached a significant milestone — 30 years in business.
The company’s vision statement begins with the words: “By providing an exceptional client and employee experience, we will…” Since Bruce Holland founded the business in 1986, creating those exceptional experiences has been his No. 1goal. The company’s current success is a testament to that.
“This year, 90 percent of our projects are with repeat clients or referrals” says company president Mike Marchal.
Holland Construction’s focus on positive relationships isn’t only with their clients. As Marchal explains, “We have a family atmosphere here where employees are given autonomy, support and opportunities to reach their full potential.” The camaraderie of the Holland team of 70 employees resulted in its being named the 2016 St. Louis Business Journal’s Best Place to Work for small businesses.
Marchal sites several key values that the company cultivates: integrity, a can-do attitude, empathy, low ego, collaboration, humility, quality and safety. Marchal is proud of Holland’s stellar safety record. The company is currently at nine and half years without a lost-time incident.
In recent years, Holland Construction Services has grown steadily, but it has been controlled growth.
“As we grow, we must continue to provide our clients with the same quality experience that they’ve always had with us” says Marchal. “We are very selective in our hiring process and intentional about maintaining our culture to ensure we are attracting and retaining the best talent available. We have the strongest team we’ve ever had, and it’s growing.”
