ALTON – As the first anniversary approaches of Alton’s first community co-op, Grassroots Grocery is seeking candidates for a new general manager position. Applications are now being accepted through Sunday, Aug 21, at 5 p.m. for employment at the store, which offers healthy, locally grown food and natural home products.
“Alton’s Hunterstown neighborhood is no longer considered a food desert due to the hard work and dedication of hundreds of volunteers who have poured their energy into the project thus far,” said Advisory Council member Sara McGibany, “We are looking forward to transitioning managerial responsibilities to a new general manager who shares our passion for local food and community development.”
Besides meeting the demand for the products it carries, the larger goals of Grassroots Grocery are to strengthen our region’s network of local farmers, engage a diverse community in improving health and self-sufficiency, and contribute to a sustainable local economy. Interest in healthy food and non-toxic products is growing, and Grassroots Grocery is providing a network for community members who value this culture.
“In our first year of operation, we’ve already seen many positive effects on our neighborhood and the community at large,” said Christine Favilla who currently serves as the volunteer store manager and buyer for the co-op, “Grassroots Grocery is a catalyst that is strengthening Alton’s economy and fostering additional investment and job creation.”
