    “Optimistic is the word I can use to describe my outlook for Madison County.  Madison County is back in a growth mode.  From the certification of the levees to new home and business construction, and from retail growth to job retention and creation, we are continually seeing positive signs our local economies are improving.  Now, it is important we capitalize on these new opportunities.
    Madison County has emerged as one of the most important and successful transportation and distribution hubs in the United States.  The county’s location in the center of the country enables items shipped from the greater St. Louis region to reach 70 percent of the country’s population within 48 hours.   
    Madison County officials work closely with Illinois and local leaders to create a business-friendly environment that promotes existing businesses and encourages new development.
    We are capitalizing on the county’s strategic location and a viable intermodal transportation system that features the Mississippi River and the new south harbor at America’s Central Port, one of the country’s largest railroad hubs, an extensive interstate highway system, pipe lines and airports.  
    One of my key goals for the remainder of 2016 and beyond is to do whatever is necessary to ensure the Granite City steel works is reopened.  Currently, more than 5,000 workers, including 2,200 at the mill itself, are laid-off as a result of U.S. Steel Corporation’s idling of the facility.  
    I have been to Washington, D.C. to meet with our senators, congressmen and other government officials to address the negative impact of inferior, imported steel being dumped in our marketplace. I have testified on this issue, and in support of the men and women who work at Granite City Steel, before the International Trade Commission.  Hopefully, we will see Granite City Steel reopening later this year.”
