Spotlight on Southwestern Illinois Commercial Contractors
Korte Company, new warehouse, America’s Central Port, Madison, Ill.

The Korte Company has begun construction on a 126,000-square-foot design-build warehouse facility at America’s Central Port in Madison, Ill. The tilt-up structure, located at the region’s only full-service, public multi-modal port, will include warehouse and office space for a private tenant.
“We are pleased to be partnered
with America’s Central Port, whose positive economic impact continues to benefit the entire area,” said Todd Korte, president and CEO of The Korte Company.
The warehouse is the latest step in the development of the South Harbor project (now Madison Harbor), a multi-year effort to create the northernmost lock-free port on the Mississippi River. The project, which began in 2010, constructed  9,600 feet of rail track, moved more than one million cubic yards of dirt and used more than 8,000 cubic yards of concrete to create a new rail/ truck/barge terminal and general cargo barge dock.
The $50 million Madison Harbor facility will increase the handling capabilities of America’s Central Port operators to better accommodate the demands and needs of Midwest growers and shippers. Waterway shipping provides agricultural and industrial shippers a more economical rate structure that will allow them to better compete in the global market place.
The port’s business and industrial park currently contains more than 1.7 million square feet of rail-served warehouse space and about 70,000 square feet of office space with access to the Mississippi River, four interstate highways and six Class I railroads. This new development is the first phase of an industrial park expansion project at the Port that calls for up to 1 million square feet of new, rail-served warehousing space.
America’s Central Port continues to expand economic growth for the region. With access to rail, water and trucking transportation options, the port offers an ever-growing number of benefits and services to not only the St. Louis metro area, but the entire Midwestern region.
Korte says that more than 90 percent of the company’s work is design-build because it offers the most flexibility and results in best value solutions. And, to date, the company has delivered more than 2,000 projects on-time and on budget.
