p11 woolpert    A new elementary school is being built at Fort Campbell, Ky., to replace its 1955 predecessor. It will be one of the first schools designed under the 21st-Century Education charter of the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA).
Targeted for completion in fall 2016, the new 142,000-square-foot Barkley Elementary School will house 740 students and will feature construction materials and high-performing systems that consume one-third of the energy of comparable buildings.
Woolpert, Inc.’s Fairview Heights team has provided multiple facility designs for DoDEA. Doug Brown, the firm’s program manager for its DoDEA designs, said they provided architectural and interior design as well as the civil, structural and MEP engineering for the Barkley project. As the project moves forward, Woolpert is now providing construction support services to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers staff.
The design incorporates aspects of the 21st-Century Education philosophy including flexible and adaptable spaces, employing a thermal envelope to boost insulation performance, harvesting of natural lighting, using solar energy to heat water, and implementing a geothermal HVAC system.
Providing innovative opportunities to link the facility itself into classroom lesson plans will be another unique outcome of this project. The outdoor learning area, an energy dashboard, tubular daylighting, LEED signage, the visible mechanical room and the photovoltaic array will all provide unique experiences between students and educators as they engage with the design behind their learning environment.
This innovative project has received several honors, including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Design Honor and Building the Future Awards, Learning by Design Outstanding Project Award, and the American School & University Works in Progress Citation Award.
Established in 1911, Woolpert, Inc. is a full-service design, geospatial and infrastructure management firm with clients from the federal, state/local and private sectors across the U.S.
