Alton casino closes because of flooding

From Illinois Business Journal news services

ALTON – Argosy Casino Alton  temporarily suspended operations Monday night because of flooding on the Mississippi River.

In a letter to customers, officials said they do not expect the casino to be closed for a prolonged period but cannot predict when the Mississippi River will recede to the point that it will be able to resume operations.

“Extensive rains in the area have caused flooding conditions on roadways and limited access to our property. Our guests are welcome to visit our sister property Hollywood St. Louis Casino & Hotel in Maryland Heights, Mo., which has not been impacted. Our guests will also have the ability to access their benefits and comps using the Marquee Rewards program.” said Joelle Shearin, vice president and general manager. “We will continue to work diligently to resume operations once we can ensure the safety of everyone traveling in the area.”

Argosy has managed to remain open during most of past flooding by building extensive ramps or hauling in rock to block floodwaters. This flood is different because it was brought on by torrential rains that left little advance time to react.
