BELLEVILLE – HSHS Hospice Southern Illinois is now accepting patients into its hospice program in St. Clair, Madison, Monroe, Randolph and Washington counties. HSHS Hospice Southern Illinois’ has an office located at 340 West Lincoln, Suite 580, on the campus of HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.

HSHS Hospice Southern Illinois focuses on caring for the whole person and that person’s family, as they face the end of a life. Hospice uses an interdisciplinary approach to caring for terminally ill individuals that stresses palliative (comfort) care as opposed to curative care. Hospice care may take place wherever a person lives, including in their homes, assisted living facilities, or nursing homes.

Shawna O’Dell, HSHS Hospice Southern Illinois director, said: “Our hospice core services include physician care and evaluation; nursing services that are available on a 24-hour basis, seven days a week; medical social services by a qualified social worker; and counseling with respect to care of the terminally ill individual and adjustment to death.”

Hospice focuses on improving the quality of life of patients with terminal illnesses by addressing their physical, psychosocial, spiritual and emotional needs. O’Dell said.
