Southwestern Illinois Congressmen are promising to fight any idling of Granite City steel operations.

Rep. Mike Bost, R-Murphysboro, and Rodney Davis, R-Taylorville, issued the following statement after U.S. Steel announced it is examining a consolidation of its North American Flat-Rolled operations and may temporarily idle its Granite City Works steelmaking operations and most finishing operations in Granite City:

“As we continue to gather information tonight on this late-breaking announcement, I have reached out to our steelworkers and offered my assistance during this time of uncertainty,” said Bost. “I am deeply disappointed in today’s announcement and will do all I can to advocate for this idling not to occur.”

“Today’s announcement is extremely disappointing,” said Rep. Davis. “I’ve been in contact with both U.S. Steel and the USW to gather more information and stand ready to assist in whatever way necessary to help the impacted workers and their families.”
