O’Fallon gets high honors as community for veterans in consumer-site ranking

From Illinois Business Journal news services

O’FALLON – Mayor Gary L. Graham says O’Fallon was been ranked as the 18th best community in America for veterans by the consumer advocacy site NerdWallet.

O’Fallon is the only community in Illinois to appear on the top-50 list.

“It is an honor to be ranked as one of the top communities in America for veterans,” Graham said. “O’Fallon is great place to live and work, and this ranking is just another measure of that.”

NerdWallet ranked communities based on economic opportunity and community support for veterans. Economic opportunity was based on the percentage of industries that employ veterans, unemployment rate for veterans, and the median income for veterans. Community support was based on the percentage of residents in a city who are veterans, according to the 2013 American Community Survey.

Statistics for O’Fallon:

– Percentage of veterans in the adult population: 21.3 percent
– Percentage of industries that employ veterans: 21.7 percent
– Veteran unemployment rate in 2013: 6.7 percent
– Median income for veterans: $67,796

O’Fallon has previously been ranked by NerdWallet. In June 2013, O’Fallon was ranked as the No. 2 community in Illinois for young families and one of the best places for homeownership in Illinois.

NerdWallet is a consumer advocacy site that builds data-driven tools and number analysis covering categories that include education, finance, health, investing and shopping.
