The Southern Illinois University Board of Trustees at its regularly scheduled meeting on the Carbondale campus today extended SIUE Chancellor Julie Furst-Bowe’s contract through June 30, 2017.
The board also approved contracts for John C. Navin, PhD, as dean of the School of Business; Curt Lox, PhD, as dean of the School of Education, Health and Human Behavior; and Jeffrey Waple, PhD, as vice chancellor for Student Affairs.
Furst-Bowe’s tenure as SIUE’s eighth chancellor began in July 2012 with a three-year contract through June 30, 2015. In June 2014, the BOT extended the term through June 30, 2016. Financial terms were not included in a release from the university and could not be immediately confirmed. However, a spokesman said the terms of the contract were the same as before.
“I appreciate the Board of Trustees’ confidence in my leadership team and our strategic plan for SIUE,” said Furst-Bowe in a statement. “During these challenging times for higher education, we have positive momentum, and I look forward to continuing our efforts to raise SIUE’s academic profile nationally and internationally.”

Navin is a professor in the Department of Economics and Finance, a department he once chaired. He has been a member of the SIUE faculty since 1991. He also served as the undergraduate program director for the bachelor’s program in economics and finance, and the bachelor’s program in economics.
Lox assumes the role of dean of the School of Education, Health and Human Behavior effective Wednesday, July 1. He has served as interim dean since May 2014. Lox brings more than 20 years of academic experience, with 19 of those at SIUE. He joined the School’s faculty in 1996. He served as associate dean from 2003-09 and as chairperson in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education from 2009-14.
Waple is the new vice chancellor for Student Affairs, and his projected start date is Wednesday, July 1. Waple brings more than 20 years of professional service in student affairs and comes to SIUE from Northern Kentucky University. He was NKU’s assistant vice president for Student Engagement and dean of students.
Waple succeeds Narbeth “Nobby” Emmanuel, who is retiring at the end of the current academic year.
