SPRINGFIELD – Hospital Sisters Health System has named that James F. Dover as president and CEO of its Southern Illinois Division. Dover will begin his services with HSHS on May 26.

In this role, Dover will lead the overall direction and strategy for the SID, which includes HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham, HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville, HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese, HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland, the HSHS Medical Group, Prairie Cardiovascular and HSHS Home Care.

Dover has more than 30 years of leadership experience in health care, including the past 27 years in Catholic health care. He most recently served as Ministry Market Leader, Santa Clara County, California for Daughters of Charity Health System. In that role he served as president and CEO of O’Connor Hospital in San Jose and Saint Louise Regional Hospital in Gilroy.

“Jim has extensive health-care leadership experience in very competitive markets where he has improved performance and market growth. He has a personable, inquisitive and engaging style, and easily relates to physicians, colleagues, clinicians and community members,” said Mary Starmann-Harrison, president and CEO, HSHS.

During his career, Dover has also served as the CEO of St. Anthony North Hospital, a member of Centura Health, in Westminster, Colorado; as the Interim Group President for the Centura Health North Denver Hospital Group; and as President and CEO of Lourdes Health Network, a member of Ascension Health, in Pasco, Washington.

From 1996 to 2000, Dover was the executive vice president for HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital in Streator, where he developed a successful physician integration model and improved the quality of care.

“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to return to HSHS and help advance the Hospital Sisters’ mission. The Franciscan culture of HSHS allowed me to grow both professionally and personally during my tenure at St. Mary’s. I look forward to reconnecting with friends from 15 years ago and meeting my new HSHS colleagues,” said Dover.

Dover holds a master’s degree in hospital dministration from the University of Minnesota and a bachelor’s degree in Bacteriology from the University of Idaho. He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He currently serves on the board of San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Dover was selected after a national search guided by a committee that represented board members, physicians, clinicians and leaders from the SID and System.

“Jim is a natural leader who is very comfortable directing and mentoring colleagues at all levels of a health system. He has a strong track record of developing high performing teams and is extremely knowledgeable about Catholic health care,” added Larry Schumacher, HSHS chief operating officer, who led the search committee.

Schumacher has been serving as interim HSHS division president and CEO for the Southern Illinois Division since January 2014.
