Beiser bill would lower taxes on some baby supplies

SPRINGFIELD – State Rep. Dan Beiser, D-Alton, is backing a measure to reduce taxes on diapers and baby wipes.

“Raising a child requires lots of love, patience and time. It can also be very expensive,” Beiser said. “For parents who are living paycheck to paycheck, lowering the sales tax on diapers and baby wipes will help make their dollars go a little further.”

Beiser is co-sponsoring House Bill 3210, which lowers the state sales tax rate on baby wipes and diapers from 6.25 percent to 1 percent. Under this proposal, these products will be taxed at the same rate as other basic necessities including food, pharmaceuticals and medical supplies. Parents typically spend $60 and $85 each month on diapers.

“Middle-class families are the backbone of communities across Illinois,” Beiser added. “Lawmakers must find ways to reduce the burden of rising costs by lowering taxes and protecting vital services.”
