KEG Build milled its way around Southwestern Illinois in 2014
Keeping the daily commute as smooth as
possible is often accomplished at night and is dependent upon precise coordination and
oversight by experts like KEG Build, a division of Kaskaskia Engineering Group LLC.
One such project completed this past summer involved milling sections of Illinois Route 15 in Belleville under contractors Keeley and Sons for the west half of the project and Kilian Corp. for the east half of the project.
The Illinois Department of Transportation awarded roughly $4.9 million for each section of this “mill and fill” project, according to Doug Keene, KEG Build’s project manager, with KEG’s portion being just under $600,000 for each. Because the project was broken into two contracts, KEG Build had to coordinate the work very carefully.
“Coordinating was key because all of the milling and repaving work was done at night, and it, along with restriping, had to be finished by morning for the daily commute,” said Keene.
The original road was concrete, and had been overlaid, repaved and resurfaced before. The life expectancy had been reached with the previous resurfacing, and it was time to take the road back down to a level and smooth surface. Two and one-quarter inches of milling was specified, but in some places on this project they had to go lower. The milling was done by the end of July. Paving and striping followed, and in October KEG Build was back on site to cut in the rumble strips.
Other area projects KEG Build worked on this past year under the same two contractors included a seven-mile section on Interstate 255 from west of Horseshoe Road to Interstate 270 that was completed in the fall and a stretch of Interstate 64 at 18th Street to just west of I-255 in East St. Louis.
KEG Build provides civil and site contracting services that are clearly impacting the communities they serve. Company headquarters are in Belleville. They also have locations in Glen Carbon, Champaign, Macomb and Peoria in Illinois as well as in Evansville, Ind., and Ste. Genevieve, Mo.
