Gateway Regional Medical Center named ‘Top Performer’ for fourth time
Gateway Regional Medical Center was once again named a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures by The Joint Commission, the nation’s leading accreditor of health-care organizations. This award was for 2013 achievements and is the fourth time Gateway Regional has earned the designation, a trademark that recognizes hospitals that excel at meeting the commission’s stringent measurements for exemplary patient care.
Only 1,224 – or approximately one-third – of eligible United States hospitals achieved this distinction for attaining and sustaining excellence in certain clinical measures. The prestigious annual list was part of the commission’s 2014 annual report, “America’s Hospitals: Improving Quality and Safety.”
“This honor means that our community can turn to Gateway Regional with confidence, knowing that we strive to provide excellent care every day,” said Ed Cunningham, chief executive officer, Gateway Regional Medical Center. “Following evidence-based clinical protocols close to 100 percent of the time is not an easy goal to reach, but one that has been achieved through the dedication of our physicians, nurses and other caregivers.”
Top Performers are recognized each year for improving performance on evidence-based interventions that increase the chances of healthy outcomes for patients with certain conditions, including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care, children’s asthma, stroke, venous thromboembolism, perinatal care, inpatient psychiatric services and immunizations.
GRMC was recognized for attaining and sustaining excellence in accountability measure performance for heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care.
GRMC is one of just 147 hospitals to have achieved this accomplishment for four consecutive years. It was recognized in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 for its performance on accountability measure data for heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care.
“We are proud of our physicians and clinical staff for their hard work to provide safe, effective care across the hospital,” said Kevin Konzen, chief of staff, Gateway Regional Medical Center. “The Joint Commission’s recognition of our efforts is very gratifying for our entire team.”
Gateway Regional Medical Center also opened its new Gateway Urgent Care at 4273 S. State Route 159 in Glen Carbon last year. Open seven days a week, the 4,000-square-foot center is meant to bridge the gap between the traditional primary care physician and a hospital emergency room. It will also house both digital X-Ray imaging equipment and a lab for on-site testing.
GRMC provides primary care in Collinsville, Edwardsville, Troy and Wood River, in addition to both women’s health and orthopedics in Glen Carbon. A full range of specialties is offered at the Granite City campus as well.
