Kaskaskia Engineering Group, Illinois Route 13 project, Carbondale to Carterville
By MELISSA MESKE
Along a five-mile stretch of Illinois Route 13 extending east from North Giant City Road at the edge of Carbondale to Greenbriar Road in Carterville, Kaskaskia Engineering Group, LLC is completing a portion of the first stages of design on behalf of the project’s lead design consultant, Crawford, Murphy, & Tilly, Inc. of Springfield.
These design recommendations are a part of Illinois Department of Transportation District 9’s anticipated widening of the highway from two lanes in each direction to three and adding a multi-use path as well to the eastbound section.
Improvements to Illinois 13 from Carterville to Marion have been going on for some time now, and this will be an additional improvement. Widening will serve the estimated 30,000-40,000 vehicles that travel the stretch daily now and the expected continuing growth of the area from Marion to Carbondale.
“KEG’s role is to coordinate and perform the subsurface exploration of the soils and rock for the project and provide geotechnical recommendations and analyses with respect to design and construction of the proposed improvements in accordance with IDOT’s means and methods,” said Senior Geotechnical Engineer Matt Masterson.
The company will complete slope stability analyses to determine how steep or shallow IDOT will be able to go with their construction as well as to determine if there are soft soils or muck levels to be addressed before or during the construction. Recommendations will also be made as to how best to handle constructing the eastbound lane widening that will impact the lake at Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge as well as support of the bridge and culvert expansions that will be a part of this project.
A total of 76 borings will be done to determine soil conditions in the impacted area and design recommendations will be made based on the findings. KEG’s roadway geotechnical report is anticipated to be complete by May.
