Welding class provides a spark for couples, too
GRANITE CITY – Selsius Corporate & Career Training at Southwestern Illinois College is bringing back a popular workshop, Welding for the Average Joe, which in some cases attracts not only Joe but his wife Jane.
The three-session course for both men and women will be held at the Sam Wolf Granite City Campus, 4950 Maryville Road. Gailyn Cornell, who has 30 years of welding experience, will provide training for artistic creations and repairs and offer a sample of welding as a career.
“Men and women can take the course individually, but what we found the first time we offered it was that many couples took it together,” said Julie Ninnis, communications and webv specialist for SWIC.
GThe workshop introduces the most common forms of welding and welding terminology and provides the basic training needed to weld safely and effectively.
The U.S. Department of Labor has projected a 15-percent increase in welding jobs by 2020, welding could be a viable career that most would have never considered.
Welding for the Average Joe will be held Saturdays, Nov. 1 to 15, from 8 a.m. to noon. The $89 fee includes use of gloves, safety glasses and helmet.
