State to pay $2.5 million toward new public pool in East St. Louis

EAST ST. LOUIS – Gov. Pat Quinn today announced a capital investment of $2.5 million to construct a new public swimming pool in East St. Louis.

The project is funded by his Illinois Jobs Now! construction program.

“With today’s temperature in the 90s, it’s the perfect time to think about what a new swimming pool will mean to East St. Louis residents,” Quinn said. “This investment will give the local community a facility to be enjoyed for years to come. It will promote physical health, bring the community together and create new jobs for hardworking local residents.”

“The community greatly appreciates the East St. Louis Park District and the state of Illinois collaborating to bring a new pool to historic Lincoln Park, a place where hundreds of the community’s residents have learned to swim and have been able to cool off for over fifty years,” East St. Louis Mayor Alvin Parks said. “We also thank Governor Quinn and the state for continuing to help make meaningful construction jobs and ongoing jobs available for the people of East St. Louis.”

The East St. Louis Park District will receive a $2.5 million investment for a new swimming pool in the Pop Myles Swimming Complex, located in Lincoln Park. The existing Pop Myles Pool will be demolished and a new aquatics facility will be constructed. The project also includes the renovation of the existing facility and the construction of a 120-car parking lot. The total estimated cost is $3.5 million.
