p08 kellet    A new chapter is about to begin for Beth Kellett, an attorney at HeplerBroom LLC of Edwardsville, as she and her husband anticipate the arrival of their first child at the end of December. But newness is a challenge Kellett anticipates every day, and one of which she greets head on, eagerly and passionately.
In fact, she notes that one of the most rewarding parts of her job is that each case brings something new with it —new facts, new allegations, new defenses, new challenges — and she often has to become an expert in a new subject matter in a short amount of time to effectively represent her clients. As an associate attorney at the firm, Kellett is focused on litigation with a primary emphasis in defense of complex, multi-party civil cases.
Kellett’s cases expose her to a variety of experiences. Some involve multi-million-dollar matters with a national scope and impact, others are more local.
“The differences in each case allow me to fulfill a variety of roles depending on the case’s nature,” she said. “My job is never boring, and the attorneys and staff at HeplerBroom are wonderful to work with, taking a great deal of pride in the work we all do.”
Representing parties in cases in Illinois and Missouri, Kellett also is barred in Massachusetts and Washington, D.C. She grew up in Beverly, Mass., a city on Massachusetts’ North Shore and approximately 25 miles from Boston. She completed her undergraduate studies at D.C.’s Georgetown University in 2002.
After graduation, she worked for a law firm that specialized in immigration and human rights issues. Kellett enjoyed what she was doing there so much that she decided to take the LSAT and pursue a law degree. She completed her juris doctorate at Georgetown in 2006. Her words of advice for other aspiring professionals in the field today include finding a mentor who garners your respect both personally and professionally and being active in professional organizations.
A member of the Illinois Association of Defense Trial Counsel, Kellett is the regular columnist for “Supreme Court Watch” in the IDC Quarterly. She is also a member of the Young Friends Board at Marian Middle School, the only all-girls middle school serving urban adolescent youth in the St. Louis community. When away from their firms, she and her husband Chris (who is also an attorney) enjoy spending time with their family.
